The Portuguese island Madiera has flooded

More than 30 persons were lost as a result of flooding and landslips on island Madiera in Portugal, informs CNN.

Critical condition

68 persons are hospitalised, three from them in a critical condition. According to the vice-president of agency of a civil defence of Madiera Pedro Barbosa, number of missing persons is estimated in tens persons so the number of victims and victims still can grow.

Down-pour disaster

On Saturday, on February, 20th, on island there have urgently arrived the prime minister of Portugal Jose Socrates and Minister of Internal Affairs Rui Pereira. According to the message of the authorities, the situation is under the control. The president of country Cavaco Silva has promised to render any help to inhabitants of Madiera and local administration. The disaster is caused by torrential rains which have fallen upon island last days.

The island Madiera is approximately in 600 miles to the southwest from the Atlantic coast of Portugal.
